For the past few weeks, my prayers have been, “Lord, please guide me.” Too many voices whispered into my mind, telling me what to do. I sometimes feel confused because I feel pulled back whenever I dare to take the next step. The question is, what is causing this battle inside? How am I praying and eager to hear from God, but I do not feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit? You begin to wonder where the separation is between the voice of God and receiving what is being told to you. Am I hearing from God? Am I understanding what He is saying? Am I discerning His voice correctly? Question after question, but am I left with the same doubt.
The thing is, the voice of God can become unclear when our prayers are attached to our emotions, wants, and desires. We can compare it to when we are hungry; all you are thinking about is food. You even start creating images of objects being food because your desire to eat has now affected your whole body. The same thing happens when we pray and await an answer, but we already have OUR answers in our minds. We are fixed on what we want, so now everything we believe we are receiving from God turns out to be our heart’s desire.
This is why we need to differentiate God’s desires from our desires. How would we know God’s desires? The answer is simple. The Spirit of truth will guide us. The Bible says in John 16:13, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” There is the Spirit of truth who will guide you into everything God has already established for your life. We must filter out our truth with God’s truth. I say this because, yet again, we think our truth is what God wants for us. That is not the case. To know the truth of God, we must know His Word. Read and study the scriptures. The verse says that the Spirit will not speak on His own authority, but He hears what God has spoken. Everything that is written in God’s Word is God’s voice. So the problem is not that God is not speaking; the problem is we are not taking the time to learn His voice. We understand who people are by spending time with them. Eventually, you get to know someone so well that you can know their voice without physically looking at them. It is the same with God. As you spend time with Him in prayer and reading the Word, you will quickly know when He is speaking and guiding you.
You can rest assured that whenever God speaks to you, His Spirit of truth guides you step by step. The Spirit can only lead you by truth. The Bible says, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” This gives us the confidence that every time we hear from God, His truth will always guide us to the freedom we are looking for. Be encouraged and get into your Word. The Lord is ready to speak to you, but are you prepared to listen and be guided?
